UNS S32550 / 1.4507 / F61 – Super Duplex Round Bars
UNS S32550 Super Duplex stainless like Duplex, is a mixed microstructure of austenite and ferrite (50/50) which has improved strength over ferritic and austenitic steel grades. The main difference is that Superduplex has a higher Molybdenum and Chromium content which gives the material greater corrosion resistance.
SuperDuplex has the same benefits as its counterpart – it has lower production costs when compared with similar ferritic and austenitic grades and due to the materials increased tensile and yield strength, in many cases this gives the purchaser the welcomed option of purchasing smaller thicknesses without the need to compromise on quality and performance.
Super duplex stainless steel is essentially duplex stainless steel, but with additional characteristics. It possesses 25% chromium content, 7% nickel content, and 4% molybdenum content. Because it possesses more of each element, it has higher resistance to corrosion than does duplex stainless steel.
UNS S32550 / 1.4507 Round bars are also known as Super Duplex Ferralium 255-SD50.
Ferralium 255 is a super duplex stainless steel in the Ferralium family. It was the first super duplex stainless steel. Developed by reputed manufacturer to meet the needs of the oil, gas and chemical industries, Ferralium 255 achieves higher strengths than most other stainless steel varieties and corrosion-resistant alloys. It is resistant to chloride SCC, as well as crevice corrosion and pitting. Furthermore, it features double the yield strength of Alloy 20.
As a 25% Cr alloy, with significant additions of copper, Ferralium® 255 offers excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of corrosive chemicals. This includes sulphuric, nitric and phosphoric acid. Ferralium 255 contains 2% copper, which is more than other super duplex grades. As a result, Ferralium 255 features better resistance to acids than most other alloys.
However, it is not only the oil, gas, and chemical industries where Ferralium 255 thrives. Ferralium 255 also provides outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and other chloride-rich environments, making it an excellent material for use in marine environments. This resistance has several contributing factors. The first of these is because the Critical Pitting Temperature of Ferralium 255 exceeds 50°C. At the same time, Ferralium 255 features excellent ductility and impact strength at both ambient and sub-zero temperatures. These, combined with high resistance to abrasion, erosion and cavitation erosion, ensure outstanding resistance.
The characteristic features of high strength and corrosion resistance exhibited by the dual microstructure (austenite, ferrite) associated with duplex stainless steels are found in UNS S32550. It is similar in composition to the more widely used super duplex grade UNS S32760. UNS S32550 has a slightly higher copper level, lower nickel and no deliberate tungsten additions, and is normally supplied to achieve the UNS S32760 PREN requirement of 40.
