SAE 4340 / AISI 4340 Round Bars
SAE 4340 / AISI 4340 Round Bars is a 1.8% Nickel Chromium Molybdenum High Hardenability High Tensile Steel
Characterised by high strength and toughness in relatively large sections.Pre hardened and tempered 4340 can be further surface hardened by flame or induction hardening and by nitriding. 4340 is used in most industry sectors for applications requiring higher tensile/yield strength than 4140 can provide.
4340 Round Bars has very good fatigue resistance. This alloy SAE 4340 may be heat treated to high strength levels while maintaining good toughness, wear resistance and fatigue strength levels, combined with good atmospheric corrosion resistance, and strength.
Due to availability the ASTM 4340 grade steel is often substituted with European based standards 817M40 / EN24 and 1.6511 / 36CrNiMo4 or Japan based SNCM439 steel.
The hardenability limitations of this grade (depth to which it will harden / obtain the specified mechanical properties after heat treatment) must always be taken into account when designing and selecting equipment.
