13-8MO Stainless Steel Alloy (UNS S13800) is a martensitic Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel that has Excellent Strength, High Hardness, Superior Toughness, and Good Corrosion Resistance. Compared to other ferrous base materials alloy 13-8 Mo Stainless Steel offers a high level of useful mechanical properties under severe environmental conditions. Alloy 13-8 Stainless Steel is used in Aerospace components, landing gear, nuclear reactor components, petrochemical industry, injection molding equipment etc. Alloy 13-8 Stainless Steel in the annealed condition can be strengthened further by relatively low temperature heat treatment.
We Textron Steel and Alloys keep Ready Stocks of 13-8 MO Stainless Steel which is a martensitic precipitation/age-hardening stainless steel capable of high strength and hardness along with good levels of resistance to both general corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. 13-8 MO stainless has good fabrication characteristics and can be age-hardened by a single low temperature treatment. Good transverse toughness properties are achieved by tight chemical composition control, low carbon content, and vacuum melting. Typical applications are large airframe structural components and injection molding equipment.
PH 13-8 MO alloy exhibits good ductility and toughness in large sections in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. The excellent properties of PH 13-8 Mo stainless are obtained through close control of chemical composition and microstructure plus specialized melting which reduces impurities and minimizes segregation. Cold work prior to aging increases the aging, especially for lower aging temperatures.
13-8 Mo stainless has been used for valve parts, fittings, cold-headed and machined fasteners, shafts, landing gear parts, pins, lock washers, aircraft components, nuclear reactor components and petrochemical applications requiring resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. Generally, this alloy should be considered where high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking are required in steel showing minimal directionality in properties.
13-8 alloy (UNS S13800) Typical applications are large airframe structural components, injection molding equipment and slide gates to control water flow. The S13800 alloy is martensitic in structure in the solution annealed condition and is further strengthened by a relatively low temperature heat treatment, which precipitates a strengthening phase in the alloy. Like the S17400 alloy, the S13800 alloy requires only a simple heat treatment, a one step process conducted at a temperature in the range 950°F (510°C) to 1150°F (620°C) depending on the combination of strength and toughness desired. A wide range of properties can be produced by this one step heat treatment. Heat treatment at about 950°F (510°C) produces the highest strength.
Alloy 13-8 stainless is usually available in an annealed condition, also known as solution heat condition or Condition A. In order to allow a complete martensitic transformation, the alloy is solution treated at 913-940°C for 15 to 30 minutes followed by air cooling or oil quenching to below 15.5°C. A Precipitation Hardenable Chromium Nickel Molybdenum Martensitic Stainless Grade, Alloy 13-8 has excellent strength.

Applications :
This alloy is used for forged valve parts and fittings, for cold-headed and machined fasteners, forged shafts, landing gear parts, pins and lock washers, aircraft components, nuclear reactor components and petrochemical applications requiring resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
Forging :
Heat uniformly to 2150/2200ºF (1175/1205ºC) and soak for one hour before forging. Do not forge below 1750ºF (955ºC.) For optimum grain size and mechanical properties, air cool forgings to 60ºF (16ºC) before further processing and solution treat prior to hardening.
Heat Treatment :
The alloy is hardened by heating solution treated material to 950ºF (510ºC) to 1150ºF (620ºC) for 4 hours and air cooling. Solution treatment or anneal is carried out at 1700ºF (927ºC) +/- 15ºF (+/- 8ºC) and air cooling to below 60ºF (16ºC) to ensure complete transformation to martensite.
To obtain condition RH 950 – precipitation or age hardened – cold treat solution treated material at -100ºF (-73ºC) for 2 hours minimum, to transform any retained austenite. Air warm to room temperature. This must be done within 24 hours after solution treatment. Heat the cold treated material to 950ºF (510ºC) for 4 hours and air cool.
To obtain conditions H 950, H 1000, H 1050, H1100, and H 1150, precipitation or age hardened, heat the solution treated material at the appropriate temperature for 4 hours and air cool.
Machinability :
The alloy can be machined in the solution-annealed and in the various age-hardened conditions. To obtain optimum machinability, treat solution annealed material at 1400ºF (760ºC) for 2 hours and air cool, then heat to 1150ºF (620ºC) for 4 hours and air cool.
Weldability :
The alloy may be welded by shielded fusion or resistance methods. If a filler metal is required a 13-8 type should be used. Heat treatment before and after welding will depend upon required strength levels in both the parent and weld metals.
