EN8M / EN8DM steel (212A42) is a through hardening carbon manganese free-cutting steel, usually supplied untreated. En8m steel has good tensile strength and is often used in gears, shafts, stressed pins, studs, bolts, keys etc.

EN8DM also known as 212A42, is a medium carbon steel with reasonable tensile strength.

It is a free-machining version of 080M40, or EN8, for applications requiring superior properties than mild steel. Readily machinable in any condition, 212A42 is used to manufacture axles, shafts, studs, bolts, and automotive parts. It can be heat treated for further surface hardening to produce components with enhanced wear resistance.

What is the difference between EN8 and EN8M / EN8DM ?

EN8 is a medium strength steel with good tensile strength. It is suitable for shafts, stressed pins, studs, keys etc. It is usually supplied untreated but can be supplied to order in the normalized or finally heat treated which is adequate for a wide range of applications.

EN8 is a very popular grade of through-hardening medium carbon steel, which is readily machinable in any condition. EN8 is suitable for the manufacture of parts such as general-purpose axles and shafts, gears, bolts and studs. It can be further surface-hardened typically by induction processes, producing components with enhanced wear resistance. It is also available in a free-machining version, EN8M.

EN8 in its heat treated forms possesses good homogenous metallurgical structures, giving consistent machining properties.
