Aluminium 2024 Sheets is one of the more prominent Aluminium Alloys. Due to the alloys good fatigue resistance, especially in thick plate form, the material is specified for use in the aerospace and military sector in fuselage applications in such areas as structures and wing tension members. With improved fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth, Aluminium 2024 continues to maintain strength characteristics. The 2024 is available in T0, T3, T351, T4, T8, T81 and T851 tempers and in the annealed state.
Aluminium 2024 is one of the most popular high strength Aluminium alloys when it is the heat treated condition. Due to Alloy 2024 high strength and excellent fatigue resistance it is commonly used on structures and components in the aircraft and transportation industries.
Aluminium Alloy 2024 is one of the best known of the high strength aluminum alloys. With its high strength and excellent fatigue resistance, it is used to advantage on structures and parts where good strength-to-weight ratio is desired. It is readily machined to a high finish. It is readily formed in the annealed condition and may be subsequently heat treated.
The aluminium copper alloy 2024 is competitive on a strength to weight ratio with the higher-strength but heavier titanium and steel alloys and thus has traditionally been the dominant structural material in both Commercial and Military Aircraft. In addition, aluminium alloys are not embrittled at low temperatures and become even stronger as the temperature is decreased, without significant ductility losses, making them ideal for cryogenic fuel tanks for rockets and launch vehicles. The wrought heat treatable 2xxx alloys generally contain magnesium in addition to copper as an alloying element.
