What is 253MA Grade ?
253MA is an Austenitic Chromium-Nickel-Silicon Grade, 253 MA offers outstanding strength and unrivalled heat resistance.
253MA is a grade combining excellent service properties at high temperatures with ease of fabrication. It resists oxidation at temperatures up to 1150°C and can provide superior service to Grade 310 in carbon, nitrogen and sulphur containing atmospheres.
253 MA contains fairly low nickel content, which gives it some advantage in reducing sulphide atmospheres when compared to high nickel alloys and to Grade 310. The inclusion of high silicon, nitrogen and cerium contents gives the steel good oxide stability, high elevated temperature strength and excellent resistance to sigma phase precipitation.
253 MA alloy, despite its lean nickel content offers an outstanding combination of creep strength and high resistance to oxidation, sulphidation and erosion/abrasion at extremely high temperatures. This makes the alloy more economical than most heat resistant alloys.
The high heat resistant properties of 253MA are obtained by the tight control of micro alloy additions. Whilst the benefit of creep rupture strength is down to the combination of nitrogen, carbon and cerium, its superior oxidation resistance is a result of the combination of cerium and silicon.
The austenitic structure gives this grade excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.

Characteristics of 253MA :
253 MA is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloyed with nitrogen and rare earth metals. The grade is characterized by:
- • High creep strength
- • Very good resistance to isothermal and, particularly, cyclic oxidation
- • Good structural stability at high temperatures
- • Good weldability
- • Maximum operating temperature is approx. 1150°C (2100°F)
- • Oxidation resistance to 2000°F (1093°C)
- • Good resistance to sulfidation
- • Superior strength at elevated temperatures
- • Good resistance to high temperature abrasion
